Recently my aunt sent me a video about giving that touched my heart in an emotional level. The video tells a story about a young boy who stole medicines for his mother who was sick, however, he was caught red-handed by a fierce and violent lady. Fortunately, a kind-hearted stranger saved him by paying for the medicines and gave him vegetable soup. Many years later, the boy repaid the stranger’s kindness in an unexpected ways.
The video reminded me of my maternal grandfather’s story, told by my Mom. In the late 1930s, my grandfather was a wealthy man. He owns a couple of trishaw companies. Grandad rented out trishaws to generate passive income for a living. Unfortunately, due to lack of business acumen and his innocent trusting nature, he was swindled out of his fortune by “trusted” friends who supposedly employed to help manage his companies.
Long story short, Granddad ended up losing all his financial assets and in his darkest moments, he had no choice but to earn a living by being a trishaw rider.
He may not be a shrewd business man, however, he was a kind giver. Frequently, he would give the less fortunate free rides on his trishaw. Even when he does not have enough for himself, as a trishaw rider earns very little, he would generously gives his earnings to those whom he felt needed more. It reached to a stage that he had no money to replace his torn and worn out shoes because whatever savings he had, was used to buy food and milk to share with others.
I have not had the privilege of meeting my granddad because he passed on before I was born. However, I feel that his deeds are truly inspiring. He may not be financially rich, but I am very proud of him as he has priceless treasures within his heart that is worth more than gold.
All of us have something that we can give, it may not be in monetary form, we can give our time, our smiles, a listening ear, our willing hands or share our knowledge and experiences with others.
A simple yet profound lesson I have learned from my granddad is to make a positive difference on someone’s life by having a heart of compassion and each of us can let our light shine by giving. You may not be aware, but YOU could be someone’s blessings !
